Audits for the ETA Specification

ETA: performance of construction products

A European Technical Approval (ETA) consists of an approval, by a qualified body, for the marketing of a product in the European Community.

The ETA is a documented evaluation of the performance of a construction product, mainly based on specific guidelines (ETAG).

An ETA is not a "certification", but a "specification"; improperly speaking, it is essentially equivalent to an approval under a harmonized EN standard and is valid individually.

The Regulation defines: "An ETA is a positive technical assessment of the suitability for use of a product for an intended use, based on the satisfaction of the RE of the works in which the product is used".

An ETA can be issued to products for which:

  • There is no harmonized EN;
  • There is no recognized national standard
  • There is no Mandate for an EN standard
  • Which deviate significantly from the purpose of a harmonized EN standard or a recognized national standard
  • By EC derogation, even if there is a Mandate for an EN standard.

An ETA is based on the fulfillment by a construction product of a series of essential requirements:

  • Mechanical resistance and stability
  • Safety in case of fire
  • Hygiene, health and the environment
  • Safety in use
  • Noise protection
  • Energy saving and heat retention
