CSI is a body notified by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure according to the MED Directive, which covers all equipment and materials intended to be used on board seagoing vessels for civil (non-military) use. It is also notified for testing, certification and inspection activities also for those construction systems that must give evidence of the fire resistance requirement.
The technical regulations applicable to maritime products are very complex as they take into account three standardisation bodies: the SOLAS Convention, the IMO (International Maritime Organization) resolutions and the EN (European) standards.
As Directive 96/98/EC also includes the initial type testing standards for individual products and as technical regulations are constantly evolving, three updates have already been issued to date and the reference directive for technical regulations is 2002/75/EC.
