Safety Testing on Dangerous Goods Packaging

The transport of dangerous goods is subject to very detailed rules and regulations, formulated according to the type of material transported and the means of transport used.

Based on the "type" of transport, we can identify the various reference regulations:

  • ADR Transport of dangerous goods by road
  • RID Transport of dangerous goods by rail
  • IMDG Transport of dangerous goods by sea
  • ICAO Transport of dangerous goods by air
  • ADN Transport of dangerous goods on inland waterways.

Certification process

  • initial visit to the company
  • examination of the technical file
  • execution in the CSI laboratories of drop tests, overlapping of the contents, conditioning in the climatic chamber, tightness and vibration tests
  • issue of the test report
  • issuing of the approval

The Added Value of Testing

The main tests to which the packaging must undergo - carried out at the CSI laboratories - are:

  • drop test
  • tightness test at an aerostatic pressure
  • internal pressure test (hydraulic)
  • stacking test

There are also other types of tests, which are defined on the basis of the goods to be transported or the type of packaging, such as fire tests (bonfire) or vibration tests.
